Meet Lady, a recently rescued German Shepherd. Amanda told me that she showed up one night at her father’s hunting cabin. She was extremely thin, and obviously had not eaten much in some time. They offered her food in a dish…but she would not eat…not dog or human food. They offered her water but she couldn’t drink out of a bowl. Finally her Dad got a hunk of venison out of the freezer and put it down…and she ate it…so he got her more. The dog was still there the next morning and he fed her again. When he was ready to leave, he did not want to leave her. He stopped several places and no one had ever seen her, nor reported her missing. So, he took her home with him. She was not micro-chipped when checked at the vet.
When they tried to decide what to do with her, Amanda said she would take her. Lady has the typical problems of a dog who was not socialized, and who has been on the run…she does not trust other dogs and is not really comfortable around strangers. She is extremely nervous when out in the world. Amanda has never trained a dog before, but obviously cares about Lady and is a quick learner. We are working on giving Lady the tools she needs to shut out other dogs and refocus on Amanda. Just in the short time we worked together, there was a big improvement! Lady is so lucky to have landed with Amanda!
